Who is God? (6)

It’s been an amazing journey so far on the who is God series and here we are on episode six. Now I heard questions on the trinity concept so we’ll just buttress a bit on it before we proceed.

In understanding God as regards the Trinity, I think it’s very wise to pay heed to the old creeds. They’ve done quite a great job in presenting an exegesis on the Trinity. I’ll just run through a few things from some of the creeds and I’m just going to mix them all together. So let me quote some lines directly:

“And the universal faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity and the Trinity in unity.  Neither confounding the persons, nor dividing the essence, for there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost but the Godhead of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Ghost is all one. The glory, equal; the majesty, co-eternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Ghost uncreated. The Father, unlimited; the Son, unlimited; and the Holy Ghost, unlimited. The Father, eternal; the Son eternal; and the Holy Ghost, eternal. Yet, they are not three eternals, but one eternal. As also, there are not three uncreated, nor three infinities, but one uncreated and one infinite. So likewise, the Father is Almighty, the Son Almighty, and the Holy Ghost Almighty and yet there are not three almighties, but one Almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God and yet there are not three gods, but one God.  So likewise the Father is Lord; the Son, Lord and the Holy Ghost, Lord and yet not three lords, but one Lord. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge every person by Himself to be God and Lord, so are we forbidden by the universal faith to say there are three gods or three lords. The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone, not made, nor created but begotten. The Holy Ghost is of the Father and the Son, neither made, nor created, nor begotten but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three fathers; one Son, not three sons; and one Holy Ghost, not three holy ghosts. And in this Trinity, none is before or after another, none is greater or less than another but the whole three persons are co-eternal and co-equal, so that in all things as aforesaid, the unity in Trinity and trinity in unity is to be worshipped. He therefore, that will be saved, let him thus think of the trinity.”

This is the picture of the Trinity that was held. The Father is not above the Son, the Son is not above the Spirit. The Trinity is not a hierarchy; they are all co-equal, same substance, one essence.

But let’s proceed. We said we were going to do some deconstructions today, and let’s start with major ideologies of God that have been held. One ideology of God is, God is not fun or interested in fun. Well, truth is, God loves pleasure more than the average Christian. Why? Revelation 4 says Thou art worthy, O lord, to receive glory, honour, and power for thou hast created all things and for thy PLEASURE. For thy pleasure, they are, and were created. So God did all these things for his pleasure. If you check the Greek word translated “will” is thelema. It’s the same word translated pleasure. So when we say thy kingdom come, thy will be done, it’s thy pleasure be done. So what actually is God’s pleasure? Is it absolutely serious business? But for sure we know that God has a sense of humour.  Zephaniah 3:17 makes us know God sings. I would say God loves pleasure and fun and He created all things for us to freely enjoy.

Another ideology we need to get off the way is that God is so angry and waiting for us just to do the next wrong and then he doles out punishment on us. Well, that is not the picture of God, and that is what this series is trying to correct. God loves us so much and will not even as much as use a harsh word on us. Now you find out that in Isaiah 54:8-10, He promises us that the same way he promised never to destroy the earth with a flood, he would never get angry with us but He’s loved us with an everlasting love and His mercies for us will endure. That’s so beautiful to know.

There are many ideologies of God that we need to take off the way, but child of God, I want our hearts to be drawn back to scriptures and not just speculations. To look through scriptures, and see the person of God and like we’ve been saying on this series, it’s simply in the Christ, that we find the full picture of God. 2 Peter 3:15 “and remember, the Lord is waiting so that people have time to be saved. This is just as our beloved brother Paul wrote to you, in the wisdom God gave him. Speaking of these things, in all of his letters, some of his comments are hard to understand and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters around to mean something quite different from what he meant, just as they do, the other parts of scripture and the result is disaster for them. I am warning you ahead of time dear friends so you can watch out and not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people. I do not want you to lose your own secure footing but grow in the special favour and knowledge of our lord and saviour Jesus Christ. To him be all glory, and honour both now and forevermore. Amen.  It’s expedient that we have the proper knowledge of God.  In John 17, Jesus said eternal life is knowing him and knowing the father who sent him. The knowledge of God is so necessary, as it is what delivers us into the multiplication of grace. Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of him. God wants us to know him, and that is the essence for this series. He is not some angry God up there in the sky saying worship me or I punish you, he is not angry waiting to lash out all of your wrongs on you. He is not just faraway waiting for you to invoke his presence. No, scriptures says his fullness fills all things in all.  And that is what people means when they say he is immanent. God is so in love with us and Christ is the full picture of God that we need to see. Inasmuch as God is love, and light, and a consuming fire, it is first of all, a personal revelation of God in the Christ that we need before we step into the other explorations of the person of God. But in Christ, all of the dimensions of God are fully revealed. I say this so that no man leads you in a wild-goose chase after some other deep mystery. The mystery, the deepest mystery of God, the greatest mystery, the ultimate mystery is Christ and he has been revealed to us. Child of God, to know the person of God is simply to focus on the Christ. The right knowledge of the Christ who became man is revealed to us will sure set you on the path of exploring this awesome infinite one.
