Joy that overflows

Guys how did we get to November already?

It’s been quite an eventful year. In the past few days, I struggled with a crippling pain, I thought my heart would stop working the next minute. It’s a new month and for me, I’ve tagged it a happy November. I made a firm decision yesterday as the new month unfolded, to be joyful.

What made me hurt did not exactly vanish, but I chose to stay joyful in spite of the situation. After I made the conscious decision to be joyful, I’ve been in hysterics, smiling most of the time and seeing the bright side of things. Mind you, it is amidst all the things that sought to threaten my joy, that I made the decision to be joy-ful.

Joy is not one of those emotions we feel. The Oxford Dictionary’s definition of emotion is “A strong feeling deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.”

Emotions are responses to significant internal and external events. If joy were an emotion, we would have been in trouble, being joyful one moment and depressed the next because emotions are unstable and circumstantial.

Joy is a fruit that the Holy Spirit produces in us when we allow Him to control our lives. Christ said that it is a kind that cannot be taken away.

But the fruit produced by the Holy
Spirit within you is divine love in all
varied expressions: joy that overflows...
Galatians 5:22‭ TPT

Joy is a choice. If you’re given a gift, you may choose to receive it or not. Even after receiving it, you may choose to unwrap and use it or leave it to collect dust on the shelf. God gave us free wills as humans, He wouldn’t force anything on us. His mere presence in our lives brings joy, but we’d have to accept it to enjoy it.

Kay Warren defines joy as the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of our lives, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is going to be all right, and the determined choice to praise God in all things.

A righteous sinner?

Peace that subdues

If you allow the Holy Spirit control your life, He will produce the kind of joy that overflows and oozes out of every pore in you.

  1. This is beautiful Mima. We should all cultivate the habit of joy! Joy should not be based on the happenings around us.

Happiness depends on happenings, Joy depends on Christ!_ Anonymous
